Idukki Arch Dam

Located in the south Indian state Kerala, Idukki arch dam is one of the top tourist attractions in India. The dam holds the height of 168.19 meters constructed in between the two mountains named as Kuravanmala and Kurathimala. It remains to be the third highest arch dam in Asia. Idukki arch dam is built on the Periyar river and the beauty of the dam captivates more than thousands of tourists from every corner of the world. The dam plays a vital role in Kerala tourism still today. It is a worth visiting place and enjoy every moment around the dam. The dam is owned by the electricity board of Kerala. It is the main dam generating hydroelectric power and by the construction of the dam an artificial lake has been created which is also now has come up as a tourist attraction.

The early history of Idukki arch dam dates back to the story of the year 1919. During this year the head of the Araya race, Shri Kolumban focused the way to his friends Thomas and superintendent of Malankara estate. They were out for hunting in the forest. The time when the head of Araya told the legend about the two hills, Thomas was totally impressed and carried on his hunt. After reaching the place he was impressed by the falls in between two hills named as Kurathi and Kuravan. He thought of constructing an arch dam and reported to the government of Travancore in the year 1932. Several investigation was been made to the place and in the year 1969 the construction of the dam was passed. Finally the dam was also inaugurated by the Honorable Prime Minister Smt. Indira Gandhi in the year 1976.

The arch dam itself is an interesting tourist attraction and you can also explore some of the major nearby attractions. Some are like Idukki wildlife sanctuary, Nadukani, Hill View Park, underground tunnels, Periyar River and other dams. A visit to the dam is must as it gives a holiday experience of a lifetime. Cheruthoni is a small settlement on the River Cheruthoni and a confluent of Periyar River. The dam is another major dam in Kerala.The dam is known for generating the hydroelectric powers. It is also situated in the Idukki district and beautifully constructed on the Cheruthoni River. It has now become a major tourist spot and owned by the KSEB (Kerala state electricity board). The area around the dam is best for photography. The dam was constructed in the year 1976 and it is the largest concrete gravity dam in the god’s own country. It is the third highest dam in India.

Kulamave dam is also a major tourist attraction and one among the others in operating hydro powers. It is about 3,000 ft. high above the sea level and located in a hamlet of Kulamave which is an enchanting hill station. The prime attractions of the place are trekking, boating and sightseeing. The dam has its own charm and attractions which carries out a huge numbers of tourists. The dam is situated on the western side of the Asia’s third largest dam, Idukki arch dam.
